Separators are usually placed between the molars one week prior to fitting braces.
They gently wedge the back teeth apart to make it easier to cement the bands on your back molars.
The separators may cause slight discomfort for a few hours. To help alleviate the discomfort, we recommend that you dissolve one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water. Swish and gargle this solution in your mouth for just a couple of minutes (do not swallow the saltwater). If the discomfort is more severe, you may want to take a pain reliever such as Tylenol.
While you have the separators in, do not eat any sticky foods that may cause the separators to fall out.
If you lose one of your separators more than 2 days before your appointment, please call our office so that we can make arrangements to replace it.
